Mastering is the intermediate
step between your final mix and preparing it for replication
and/or distribution. Almost every commercially-released CD is
mastered no matter the budget, label, mixer, or studio behind
it. The difference between a mastered
and un-mastered song can be quite profound; dramatically improving
the over-all sound quality, clarity, consistency, stereo image,
spatial depth, portability and volume of your mixes.
It is both a technical process and an art form that relies on
an individual's skill, experience and good taste. No set of
tools or a device will automatically "master" your
music... no plug-in preset can craft the best results for your
unique and original mixes.
The amount of money you spend on a service is not necessarily
proportionate to the quality (just look at your favorite federal
bureaucracy) and you don’t have to know somebody over
at Bernie Grundman to get the job done right and on a reasonable

Mixing is about making
the song more than the sum of its parts. It is taking
a multi-track recording (different instruments on separate tracks)
and combining them into stereo (left/right) in an artful and
pleasing way, with the desired level of energy and emotion.
The most important part of mixing is getting the vocals
to fit the song. This requires finding the right volume,
tone and ambience to match the intention of the singer/writer
and ensuring that nothing clashes frequency-wise or induces
excessive tonal buildup in the instrumental parts of the track.
Once these elements are in place, highlighting the best moments
with volume rides and adding dynamics and excitement to the
production are all integral to a well-balanced final mix.
In the words of mixer Bryan Cook, “I try to keep
it as timeless as possible, not using effects that seem "cool"
today but might seem cheesy tomorrow. There is no magic box
that makes the song a "hit" and I prefer to avoid
gimmicks.”
